How Air Passenger Duty Works

APD is a UK departure tax charged per passenger on flights leaving a UK airport — it's already included in the ticket price you pay
Your band is set by the distance from London to the capital city of the destination country, not the airport you land at — so every US city sits in Band B (via Washington DC), while Bangkok and Cape Town fall into Band C
Reduced rate applies to the lowest class of travel on the aircraft (seat pitch under 40 inches); standard rate applies to any other class or a seat pitch of 40 inches or more
Children under 16 travelling in the lowest class of travel are exempt from APD — but they pay the standard rate in any other cabin and are never exempt on a large private jet
Direct long-haul flights from Northern Ireland are charged at £0 for Bands B and C
