What makes an Avios "sweet spot"?
Distance-band pricing quirks. BA prices Avios reward flights by distance zone, not by cash fare. A long intra-Europe hop that just squeezes into a lower distance band costs the same Avios as a much shorter route -- but the cash fare is far higher.
High cash-fare routes in a low Avios zone. Premium cabins on expensive routes can return well over 2p of value per Avios, versus a typical ~1p benchmark.
Low surcharges. Avios partners like Aer Lingus and Iberia levy far smaller carrier-imposed surcharges than BA on transatlantic flights, so more of the cash fare is genuinely saved.
Value score shown here is the cash fare (minus taxes and surcharges you still pay) divided by the Avios required -- the real pence-per-Avios you unlock. Anything above ~1.5p is strong; the benchmark valuation is about 1p.
Avios prices are BA off-peak return costs per person and cash fares are typical returns, both approximate and subject to change. Verify live pricing on ba.com before booking. Last verified 2026-07-16. Not financial advice.
