Standard 34-page book. Online applications are cheapest; paper forms cost more. Premium (1 day) is for adult renewals only. Fees verified 2026-07-16 on gov.uk.
How to renew — and the traps to avoid
- Renew online at gov.uk/apply-renew-passport: upload a digital photo, pay by card, and post your old passport back — it's cheaper than the paper form
- Standard applications take around 3 weeks, but allow longer at busy periods. Need it sooner? Use the 1 week Fast Track or (adults only) the 1 day Premium service
- Don't wait until your passport expires — the EU/Schengen rules bite months before the expiry date printed inside
The "10-year passport that's only good for 9.5 years" trap
- Before September 2018, HM Passport Office added any unused months from your old passport onto the new one — so a "10-year" passport could show up to 10 years and 9 months of validity
- For EU/Schengen trips, only the first 10 years from the issue date count. Those extra months are ignored at the border, so a passport can be "in date" yet still refused for EU travel
- The rule: your passport must be less than 10 years old on the day you enter, and still valid for 3+ months after you leave the Schengen area
Children's passports
- Child passports (under 16) are valid for 5 years and cost less to renew — but the same EU/Schengen and 6-month rules apply to them
- There's no Premium (1 day) service for children; the fastest option is the 1 week Fast Track
