How the Southwest Points Calculator Works

Southwest Airlines' Rapid Rewards is one of the most consumer-friendly frequent flyer programs in the US. With no change fees and revenue-based pricing, Southwest points offer solid value. Note that Southwest introduced assigned seating on January 27, 2026, ending the traditional open seating policy. Our calculator helps you estimate points earned on flights, track progress toward the coveted Companion Pass, and understand what your points are worth.

How Many Points Do You Earn Per Dollar?

Southwest uses a straightforward fare-based earning system. Basic (formerly Wanna Get Away) fares earn 2 points per dollar, Choice fares earn 6x, Choice Preferred earns 10x, and Choice Extra earns 14x. A-List status members earn a 25% bonus on top, while A-List Preferred members earn double. Note that earning rates for Basic fares were reduced by 67% in March 2025.

What Are Southwest Points Worth?

Southwest points have variable redemption rates ranging from 1.15 to 1.72 cents per point, averaging around 1.4 cpp. Unlike a fixed-value system, redemption pricing varies by route and demand. The big value multiplier is the Companion Pass -- if you have one, your effective value per point roughly doubles since a designated companion flies free (taxes only) on every flight you take.

Baggage Policy Changes (May 2025)

As of May 2025, Southwest ended free checked bags on most fare types. The first checked bag now costs $35 and the second costs $45 on Basic, Choice, and Choice Preferred fares. Business Select (Choice Extra) and A-List Preferred members still receive 2 free checked bags. This is a significant change from the long-standing policy of 2 free bags for all passengers.

International Partnerships

Southwest has expanded its reach through international codeshare partnerships with Icelandair, China Airlines, and EVA Air. These partnerships allow Rapid Rewards members to connect to international destinations beyond Southwest's own domestic and near-international network.

The Companion Pass: Southwest's Best Benefit

The Companion Pass is earned by accumulating 135,000 qualifying points or flying 100 qualifying flights in a calendar year. Once earned, it remains valid for the rest of that year and the entire following year. The fastest path is through Southwest credit card sign-up bonuses, which can provide 60,000-80,000 qualifying points in one shot. Timing your application for late in the year maximizes the pass's duration.

Chase Ultimate Rewards Transfer

Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to Southwest at a 1:1 ratio, making Chase cards an excellent companion to your Southwest strategy. Transferred points count as qualifying points toward the Companion Pass, giving you another path to earning this valuable benefit beyond just flying and credit card spending.
